From October 19 – November 25 2012, the European Month of Photography Berlin (Europäischer Monat der Fotografie Berlin / MdF Berlin), the most important German photography festival, will take place for the fifth time.

Once every two years, more than 100 institutions in Berlin – including museums, cultural institutions, private collections, galleries, embassies, state offices, photography schools and project spaces – present exhibitions and events focussing on historical and contemporary photography.

Within the framework of the 5th European Month of Photography Berlin, over 200 events will be presented in addition to the 110 exhibitions.
The spectrum of events ranges from private viewings, tours and talks, to workshops, seminars and readings, to competitions and film screenings.

On Thursday, 18 October at 7:30 pm the festival opening takes place in the Akademie der Künste. Starting at 8:00 pm, it is possible to see the exhibition Cairo. Open City New Testimonies from an Ongoing Revolution in the Festival Centre on Pariser Platz.

Tip: Have a look at the route suggestions on the MdF website, which combine exhibitions with cultural & culinary strolls through the city – or plan your schedule according to thematic aspects such as Voyeurism, Cultural and National Identities, Urban and Peripheral Spaces, Berlin, Personal Identity and more!

MdF Berlin is part of EMOP, a network of European photography, and is shown in Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna. This collobaration culminates in a catalog and an exhibition of contemporary European photography, shown in different forms in the respective cities, as well as the expansion of the European network. The MdF has been held in Berlin since 2004. Participation within the project has grown from 83 institutions, 93 exhibits and 135,000 visitors to 120 partners across Europe, who in 2010 presented over 140 exhibitions and 140 exhibitions, attracting more than 500,000 visitors. The 5th European Month of Photography Berlin is a project of Kulturprojekte Berlin.

2012 Theme: The View of the Other
The theme The View of the Other provokes debate about the ‚familiar and the other‘ in relation to the construction of identity, as well as of foreign cultures, issues of exoticism, colonialism and voyeurism etc. Due to its very nature as a process of image capturing, photography, in its various artistic or media functions – from mobile phone to pinhole cameras – plays a role within this too, in the same way a curator’s conception shapes an exhibition. The photographers and artists enter into a dialogue with the subjects and exhibitions, thus giving us insight into the development and nature of our current society, or societies.

In its fifth instalment, MdF Berlin 2012 presents a broad spectrum of institutions, thereby ensuring that this year’s theme The View of the Other can be illuminated from a multitude of thematic and media perspectives. To support both variety in artistic media and diversity of institutions and themes, newly appointed curator Katia Reich will lead a panel of judges in selecting 100 participants with 107 exhibitions from the 150+ applications they have received. The panel members are Florian Ebner (Museum für Photographie Braunschweig e.V.), Matthias Harder (Helmut Newton Foundation), Felix Hoffman (C/O Berlin), Gereon Sievernich (Martin-Gropius-Bau) and Christiane Stahl (Alfred Erhardt Stiftung).

Festival Centre
From start to finish, the Festival Centre (Pariser Platz 4A / Brandenburger Tor) will serve as both a meeting point and venue for exhibitions and events. In addition to the newly updated exhibition, Cairo. Open City – New Testimonies from an Ongoing Revolution – a collaboration with the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig – individual artistic perspectives from the exhibition project DistURBANces, which was jointly developed with EMOP partner cities Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna, will also be presented. This year’s framework program of lectures, portfolio viewing and performative media forms, in combination with the awards ceremony mean that new gems are to be discovered.
