Nico Baumgarten | How the other half lives

The talented Nico Baumgarten is currently running a crowdfunding-campaign to cover a part of the production costs for his new book. Until the 9th of March you can support the project on indiegogo!
„How the other half lives“ will be self-published in an edition of 1.000 and will be released in April 2015.

There are beautiful rewards, such as some of Nico’s previously self-published, hand-bound books (of which only few copies remain), postcards & stickers, screen-printed Anarchist-cat T-shirts – and of course, signed copies of the new book itself!

We already got a chance to have a look at the dummy, and we are very fond of this book.

Kristin Bedford | The Perfect Picture

Father Divine, known to his followers as God, once had tens of thousands of devotees in 1930s Harlem. To the outside world Father Divine died in 1965, but for his followers he “lay his body down” and is still with them as he always has been. Now in their seventies, eighties, and nineties, eighteen of the remaining celibate followers live with Mother Divine at Father’s estate outside of Philadelphia. It’s thirty-six degrees. A dry desert sun burns the roof.
From up here the vast empty ground seems endless.
The heat and the wind touch my skin.
I open a door,
the background noise of the city fades away.
With my eyes closed I see an ocean of weightless light rays –
dancing, floating…
I trust my body.
I’m here.

For several years I climbed numerous rooftops to make pictures, over and over again. For a long time I didn’t know exactly why; I simply felt attached to these strange, unknown and obscure places. I explored my city from a different angle and I photographed architectural situations up there being fascinated by the vastness and expanse as well as its limitation by moments of blocked sights. Eventually I realized that I had compiled a personal map – an imaginary walk in another dimension.

Werner Amann – Surf Fiction

SURF FICTION is Werner Amann’s unpublished work from 1997. It engages with social reality and image bound-culture in Los Angeles and other urban centers in the U.S. Beyond a mere documentary or created approach, SURF FICTION interlinks photography with collages, typography, video stills, abrupt breaks and double page spreads – switching with each page turn from one plot to another. The work plays with projections of a myth that regenerates itself from day to day, producing an image of Los Angeles and at the same time a visual reflection on modern reality. (mehr …)

In Lost Psyche, Polixeni Papapetrou portrays emblematic figures that have come to the end of their tradition, their rationale, their place in the world. Die Galerie Franzkowiak präsentiert anlässlich des 1. Monats der Fotografie OFF in Berlin die Gruppenausstellung ÜBERGANG. ERINNERUNG.

Eine Zusammenstellung, die sich mit dem Thema des Übergangs beziehungsweise mit dem der Erinnerung beschäftigt. Ein Übergang beinhaltet oft – gerade am Anfang – das Erinnern an das Vorherige. Der örtliche Übergang, der Wechsel von einem Ort zum anderen, insbesondere der von einem bekannten zu einem fremden Ort, intensiviert das Erinnern. Später erinnert man sich anders an die fremden Orte als an die gewohnten, ebenso wie der Wandel persönlicher Umstände sich auf eine ganz eigene Weise ins Bewusstsein gräbt. (mehr …)

Simon Rimaz | Unusual View of Unknown Subjects

Unusual View of Unknown Subjects, 2013

This series is a body of work based on press photographs that have been collected in various newspaper archives in the United States. All images that are published in the press are regularly gathered in these archives where they are marked, numbered and indexed by date or key words. The prints are full of peripheral elements that explain their existence and legitimacy.

From amongst all these marks, I have focused on the indications showing how the image was to be cropped for publication. These “stigmata” are proof of the use of the image and of its transformation. They take the shape of visual (sometimes textual) dialogues between the protagonists who have handled it. Parallel stories in themselves, these annotations are also indications of „that-which-has-been“, a notion that is so fundamental in the history of the photographic medium. (mehr …)

The people in Qian’s Status inhabit a strange, almost dream-like existence. We catch fleeting glimpses of them as they move through the photograph – their Status unknown. Qian’s dream sequences reveal moments of quietness and reflection of lives lived.

Qian Yongning is a Chinese photographer based in Shanghai. He has exhibited widely across China and work features in collections across Europe, China and USA. Alongside his photography interests, Qian also lectures at Shanghai University. (mehr …)
